Qalahat lies on the western coast of Oman, 24km to the north of Sur. Its history dates back to the days of Al Azd people who emigrated to it under the leadership of their chief Malik Bin Fahem. Gradually its fame began to grow and it became second capital of Hurmoz kingdom. However, its ruins began to desappear. Only the tomb of BB Miriam, the water reservoir and the town walls survived. It is said that the town was exposed to earth tremors and to the shelling of the Portuguese led by their captain Alfonso De Al Bukirk. Many travellers visited Qalahat such as Marco Polo and Ibn Batuta. About Qalahat, Ibn Batuta said, "Qalahat lies on the coast of Oman it has beautifull walls and a beautiful mosque its walls are covered with mosaic and it overlooks the sea. Its people are traders living on the wealth and resources of the Indian ocean."
